◆ The Spread of Epidemics
Although epidemics were in every time, by the progress of medicine, now humankind can treat the many and can prevent them. However, new types of virus have appeared in influenza every year, and in recent years, AIDS begins to spread explosively and the effective medical treatment method is not yet found. Moreover, the epidemic like "Ebola" or "Mad Cow Disease (BSE)" has suddenly pounced on humankind. Once, like that the black plague (the pest) swept over Europe in the middle of the 14th century, and as the result, the population in Europe decreased sharply, even in the present age when medicine has progressed highly, the possibility that such great disaster will occur always exists.

[9-1~11] And the fifth angel blew his trumpet,........... opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke ..............and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth ;............they were allowed to torture them for five months, but not to kill them,...........And in those days men will seek death and will not find it ; they will long to die, and death flies from them. .................... |
"The bottomless pit" in the text is the expression which suggests Hell (Please refer to [9-11] of the Part 2 ). Although the word "smoke" shows the spirit of epidemic confined in the bottomless pit in Hell, namely this should be called the small evil spirits, and this text has suggested that they were released. The description "then from the smoke came locusts ......." shows that this small evil spirits had the bodies as substance called virus or germ, and since John must have described the image projected on the screen as it were, probably, this suggestive vision is the consideration of God to man. And this scene continues to the following.

[9-4] they were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green growth or any tree, but only those of mankind who have not the seal of God upon their foreheads ; |
Many people are under the heavy misapprehension that civilized man can deny the existence of spirits and God, and therefore to such people, this epidemic will be given only for the purpose of giving the fear of death. However, God had the thought of wanting to give the chance of awaking to those who do not believe in God, using such method, that is, this is the love and the expedient of God, therefore, if man considers God only when he becomes sick, and if he blames God, he will surely commit still heavy sin by his thought. When the epidemic like AIDS or Ebola or more fearful epidemics suddenly begin to spread, we have to accept it with sincerity as the warning of God.
